Horticulture
The term horticulture is derived from two Latin words Hortus, meaning ‘garden’, and Cultura meaning ‘cultivation’. It refers to crops cultivated in an enclosure, i.e., garden cultivation. It is the culture of plants for food, comfort, and beautification purposes.

Extend Garden Season
Cold frames and hot beds, hoop houses, cloches, and floating row covers allow gardeners to grow plants earlier in spring and later in fall. Although these structures are used primarily for growing vegetables, they may be used for growing ornamentals, including flowering plants, as well.

Horticultural Research
Horticulture research has been conducted periodically over the years at the Spooner Agriculture Research Station. Currently research is being conducted on organic vegetables and hazelnut. The hazelnut research is part of the Upper Midwest Hazelnut Development Initiative where plants at Spooner are being evaluated and screened for production, plant habit, and other attributes needed for commercial nut production.
